What to Write in a Birthday Card: 60+ Ideas for Every Kind of Person

A wall of illustrated JustTheCardGuy birthday cards with gods, monsters and legends

You found the perfect card. Then you opened it, and the blank inside stared back at you. It happens to everyone. The good news: a great birthday message is rarely long or clever. It is mostly specific. Below you will find a simple formula and more than 60 ideas you can copy, tweak or steal from.

The three-part formula that always works

Most memorable birthday messages follow the same shape:

  1. Greeting: "Happy birthday, Sam!" Use the name people actually call them.
  2. Something specific: a shared memory, a compliment, an inside joke or a small observation about the past year.
  3. A wish or sign-off: what you hope their new year brings, then your name.

Example: "Happy birthday, Sam! I still can't believe you got us lost on the way to the campsite and somehow found the best pizza in the region. Here's to another year of excellent wrong turns. Love, Mia."

Funny birthday messages

  • Happy birthday! You're not old, you're vintage. Very, very vintage.
  • Another year older and still no sign of wisdom. I admire your consistency.
  • I was going to get you something amazing, but then I remembered you already have me.
  • Congratulations on surviving another lap around the sun. Low expectations, high cake.
  • Age is just a number. Yours is just a bit bigger than most.
  • Happy birthday to someone who is aging far better than my houseplants.
  • Don't count the candles. The fire brigade is already on its way.
  • You're officially at the age where "going out" means a really nice dinner. Enjoy it.
  • May your coffee be strong, your knees be quiet and your cake be enormous.
  • I tried to find a card that says how great you are, but they don't make them that big.
  • Another year of putting up with me deserves recognition. Happy birthday, hero.
  • You don't look a day over fabulous.

Heartfelt birthday messages

  • The world got a little better the day you arrived. Happy birthday.
  • I hope this year treats you as kindly as you treat everyone around you.

  • Happy birthday to a heart that's bigger than it has any right to be.

Birthday messages for a best friend

  • Happy birthday to my partner in crime. The statute of limitations has almost run out on most of it.
  • Friends like you are rare. Friends who still answer my 2 a.m. voice notes are rarer.
  • Thank you for knowing exactly when I need advice and when I just need snacks.
  • We've been friends for so long, I'm not sure who's the bad influence anymore.
  • To many more years of laughing at things nobody else finds funny.
  • Growing older is mandatory. Growing up is optional. Let's keep it that way.
  • I'd say you're like a sister/brother to me, but I actually like you.
  • Happy birthday to the person who knows all my secrets and still invites me to things.

Birthday messages for a partner

  • Every year with you is my favourite year so far. Happy birthday, love.
  • You're the best thing that ever happened to my calendar. Let's make today all about you.
  • I'd choose you on every ordinary Tuesday, and especially today.
  • Thank you for the laughter, the patience and for always stealing the blanket so charmingly.
  • Here's to growing old together. You first, though.
  • Happy birthday to my favourite person, my best decision and my preferred travel companion.

Birthday messages for a colleague

  • Happy birthday! Thank you for making Mondays slightly less Monday.
  • Wishing you a day with zero meetings and unlimited cake.
  • It's a pleasure working with someone so talented. Have a brilliant birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the person who always knows where the good biscuits are hidden.
  • May your inbox be empty and your birthday be full.
  • Cheers to another year of teamwork, coffee runs and excellent ideas.

Milestone birthdays: 30, 40, 50 and beyond

  • 30: Welcome to your thirties, where you finally understand why people get excited about a good frying pan.
  • 30: Thirty looks good on you. So does the confidence you've earned.
  • 40: Forty is when life gets interesting. You were always ahead of schedule.
  • 40: Happy 40th! Old enough to know better, young enough to do it anyway.
  • 50: Half a century of being wonderful. That's some serious dedication.
  • 60+: Here's to decades of stories, and to the ones you haven't told us yet.

For the friend who loves myths, monsters and dark stories

If the birthday person would rather receive a card from Odin than from a cartoon balloon, lean into it. A few lines that fit an illustrated mythology card or a gothic birthday card:

  • The gods have reviewed your past year and declared it legendary.
  • May your feast be long, your enemies confused and your cake suitably epic.
  • Another year older, another chapter in a saga worth telling.
  • Happy birthday. The ravens report you're doing just fine.
  • You've survived another year. The underworld is mildly disappointed.
  • Even monsters celebrate birthdays. Especially the good ones, like you.
  • Somewhere in the woods, a cryptid is raising a glass to you.
  • Darkness is overrated. You light up every room, even the haunted ones.

How to sign off

A sign-off sets the tone almost as much as the message itself. Pick one that sounds like you:

  • With love,
  • Big hugs,
  • Cheers to you,
  • Yours in cake,
  • Always on your side,
  • Your favourite (don't tell the others),
  • Until the next adventure,
  • With all my heart,
  • Raise a glass,
  • Forever your partner in crime,

Quick tips before you start writing

  • Draft on your phone first. It saves the card from crossed-out words.
  • One specific detail beats five compliments. "You made my move bearable" is warmer than "you're amazing".
  • Match the card. A dark-humour card can take a cheeky message; a gentle illustration asks for something softer.
  • Keep it short if you're unsure. Two honest sentences are better than a paragraph you don't mean.

Don't feel like writing? Let the card do it

Some days the words just won't come. That's exactly why we make Story cards: every one has a complete, original letter printed inside, written in the voice of the character on the front. You can add a single line and your name, and the card still says a lot. Prefer to write it all yourself? Every design is also available with a blank inside.
